ESL Classes

Jumpstart Network ESL (English as a Second Language) program provides English language training to non-English speaking Marin and Sonoma County residents.  The program has been in existence since 1989 and has served thousands of students.  Instruction is free to all students; the only cost is a $20 instructional materials fee.

Classes meet on Saturdays for ten weeks from 9:00AM - noon and focus on vocational English language skills.  Volunteers serve from 8:30AM - 12:30PM, depending on the volunteer's assignment.  Breaks include refreshments and opportunity for social interaction.  Picnics and field trips occur frequently.

We have two sessions in the spring and one in the fall, each with a variety of levels - beginning, intermediate and advanced.  No classes during the summer.

Volunteer opportunities for the current and future semesters:

  1. Assistant to the Director - to assist the current Director in various administrative and teach duties (6-8 hours/week to begin September)
  2. Classroom teacher (Training will be provided; this is a wonderful opportunity for individuals interested in the teaching profession.  Current Director and lead teacher hold a Master's Degree in ESL, has fourteen years of teaching at City College of San Francisco, and is a qualified teacher-trainer)
  3. Teachers' Assistant (Four currently needed; potential to be trained as lead teachers to serve in the fall; needed immediately)
  4. Registration (need immediately a team of four, one person to oversee registration/testing and three to administer testing and registration)
  5. Refreshment Coordinator (Two/three volunteers needed for two hour commitment on Saturdays; includes food pickup, setup and clean up)
